Touchstone Theatre and The Cultch’s presentation of Any Night is over. Done. The response was fantastic. There were people who loved it – were inspired and excited. And there were some who didn’t. And that’s okay. I have to remind myself that it’s okay. Not everyone is going to like what you do. Especially when it comes to art. People are going to have strong opinions. Especially when you are trying to do new things with an old form… But I would take trying new things and falling down over taking the safe route any day. Even though it’s hard. And sometimes exhausting and disheartening. Because it is also exciting and exhilarating. And filled with growth… And if we’re not trying to grow as artists and as human beings, then what’s the point?
Thank you to all who came to the show. And to all those who helped bring it to life.
” There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost. The world will not have it.
It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable it is nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.
No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others. ”
~Martha Graham to Agnes de Mille
